Makers of hand-crafted luxury shepherd’s huts in Derbyshire

Our ‘Pinfold’ shepherd’s huts are built to the highest specification, with every little detail, whether hidden or visible, thought through and implemented with the utmost care, to ensure a hut that will last for generations to come.

While our huts are fully bespoke, and can therefore be built to suit your individual ideas and requirements, the details below will hopefully give you an idea of the quality you can expect from a Pinfold Shepherd Hut.

oak vanity unit with copper sink in shepherd hut bathroom

The bathroom…

Small is beautiful, but never lacking in luxury, and nowhere is this more evident than in the perfectly appointed bathroom with its stunning copper and nickel basin mounted on a floating oak vanity unit, wall-hung WC and generous shower enclosure.

Windows and doors…

Our hardwood windows and doors are crafted by a highly experienced local joiner, then spray finished using industry leading Teknos paint for a hardwearing finish that can stand up to the good old British weather. In this instance, hand forged pewter ironmongery made by the craftsmen at ‘From The Anvil’ and ‘The Suffolk Latch Company’ have been fitted, but any finish you wish for can be incorporated.

The foundation…

An oak and douglas fir chassis provides a sturdy platform for the hut whilst retaining its traditional characteristics. A custom made steel chassis can also be provided if preferred. In either case, heavy cast iron wheels are fitted along with an A-frame tow bar and steerable front axle allowing the hut to be moved into position easily.

Interiors…

With our background in kitchen and furniture design and installation, there are no restrictions as to what we can fabricate for the interior joinery and cabinetry! Here we have used our signature ‘pippy’ oak extensively, but the cabinetry could be hand-painted in the colour of your choice, or built from ash, or walnut, or reclaimed pine…

Exterior cladding…

We adore all things wooden (as you may have noticed) so our favourite material for cladding our shepherd’s huts is feather edge European green oak, which is left unfinished to allow it to weather to a beautiful silvery colour over time. Other options are of course available, including wriggly tin and various other timbers such as Siberian Larch and Cedar that can be finished in a varity of ways to suit your preferred look.

shepherds hut kitchen

The Kitchen…

We can build a kitchen for your shepherd’s hut to suit your requirements, but would typically include an integrated fridge with ice box, a small two ring induction hob, a sink, and a built in combination oven or microwave. Here, we have used pippy oak cabinetry with Ceasarstone quartz worktops, but cabinets hand-painted in the colour of your choice with a wooden worktop would also look fantastic, it just depends what you want…

pinfold shepherd huts bedroom

The bedroom…

We favour a tradiditional ‘cabin’ style bed in our shepherd’s huts, with curtains over the entrance to create a delightfully cosy enclosed sleeping area, with the tactile warmth of our pippy oak headboard making it a lovely place to be. The bedroom can also be made to be more open, or we can fit a fold down bed for a more flexible living space - the choice is yours!

shepherds hut seating area

The living area…

Our shepherd’s hut has a comfortable seat with storage drawers below, and a breakfast bar for eating (or drinking wine) at. A pull-out coffee table provides somewhere to rest your cup of tea whilst relaxing on the seat, and there is also a tea tray in a little slot so you can take your drinks to bed…

Storage space…

Storage is important, especially if you are using your shepherd’s hut as holiday rental accommodation. As well as the kitchen cabinets and a vanity unit and shelving in the bathroom, there are large drawers under the seat, another large drawer under the bed, and a cubby hole under the breakfast bar ideal for stowing away suitcases or bags…

wood burning stove in shepherds hut

Keeping warm…

There is the option to fit a wood-burning stove in your shepherd’s hut if you wish, which really does make it into a wonderfully warm and cosy environment. If a wood-burner isn’t for you though, there are other options, such as an Everhot stove which provides enough heat to keep the space warm. We can fit either electric underfloor heating or electric radiators, with a heated towel rail in the bathroom, and can add in a plinth space heater under the kitchen units for an extra boost of heat should it be needed. Whatever you choose, the hut is incredibly well insulated so will keep the heat in and the cold out.

Finishing touches…

Pewter, antique brass or wrought iron hardware? Oak or painted trims? What about the lightswitches and socket fronts? What colour scheme will you choose? What about curtains and blinds? These are all the little details that can have a huge impact on the finished look of your shepherd’s hut, so let your imagination run free and start planning what your dream hut will look like!

More than skin deep…

Whatever your dream shepherd’s hut may look like in terms of finish and decoration, a lot of essential work goes into preparing the basic structure to ensure the hut is watertight, warm in all weathers and will stand up to anything the elements can throw at it. Most of this work cannot be seen once the hut is complete, and doesn’t make for very pretty photos, but without it the hut would not be fit for purpose, and certainly not something we would be prepared to put our name to! So here is a brief specification that applies to all our shepherd’s huts, whatever the final appearance may be:

Build Specification

  • Single span oak and douglas fir chassis, finished with exterior grade Osmo Oil - OR - powder coated steel chassis, topped with a layer of 18mm plywood to provide a solid platform.

  • Cast iron wheels finished in black enamel paint, and embossed with the Pinfold Shepherd Huts brand.

  • The frame is constructed from 18mm structural plywood for a lightweight yet incredibly strong and rigid structure, then completely clad in structural OSB.

  • 100mm wall and ceiling cavities, and 80mm wall cavities filled with Rockwool RWA45 fire-rated acoustic insulation.

  • The internal walls are lined with DuPont Tyvek Airguard smart membrane, and the exterior wrapped with DuPont Tyvek Housewrap breather membrane, both of which help to maintain a comfortable dry environment.

  • The internal walls are finished with moisture resistant sheet material which gives the appearance of traditional timber matchboarding without the associated movement and shrinkage cracks, all spray finished with several coats of Benjamin Moore ‘Scuff-X’ paint for a hardwearing fully scrubbable finish.

  • The external cladding is installed with all necessary ventilation requirements adhered too.

  • The hardwood windows and doors are fitted with double glazed units, all necessary weather seals, and are spray finished with the commercial Teknos Aquatop paint system.

  • The shower area is treated with a waterproofing solution prior to the shower tray and shower panels being installed, so that in the unlikely event of any leaks the underlying structure won’t be damaged. There is also a service hatch underneath the shower, so that the waste can be accessed from the outside should it ever become blocked.

  • The woodburning stove (if included) is fitted and certified in accordance with HETAS guidelines and manufacturers specification, with full heat shield and full height twin wall flue pipe.
